A bit of research led me to Galway Kinnell who I confess not to know. I'll seek out some of his verse. The quote did remind me of the old man in Tennessee Williams' Night of the Iguana though. He was from Nantucket too as I recall!
hmmm.
I didn't know myself or rather I'm not sure where I picked the words up from...
it's just one of those lines
that I've always held in my head...
and with today being the first of a fall...
